Diary Entry : 02/04/2014

In my single cam drama, I am currently half way through in writing my story. The genre I have chose is a Thriller of two maybe three girls in a house by themselves. It starts by the girls coming in from a night out and the protagonist(Main Character) has red liquid on her hands. The audience will be unaware of the before event, I've done this so the audience can have their idea of what happened to her or what she did?

I have had positive feedback from class mates about my story. I already know what equipment, cast, crew and the diagetic and non-diagetic sounds that I will using.

The way I have broken up my piece is finding a title for each sequence for example: 

1.Start - Mystery Entrance

2.First Appearance!

3.I Know what you did!

4.Lock down!

5.You missed a door! 

I've done this to make it easier for myself when shooting my drama piece. As it stands my usual partner Maddie Govier is making this drama piece with me.

I haven't got as far as writing the script yet, but I have a good idea on the individual characters that will be the cast in this single camera drama. I feel that knowing your characters better will determine how far the script can go. Meaning if a character is not a professional actor and is quiet can't possibly have a loud voice, this will show discomfort on the screen. My idea was to use myself as the protagonist, because this drama will show the emotional enormity of this 'crisis'.

My attentions are to make the audience move to the edge of their seat. I saw this as an opportunity to use females other then males only because I know a male in trouble wont have the same reaction when a female is in trouble. 

Diary Entry 2 : 30/04/2014

Myself and Maddie have made progress in making our single camera drama, by writing each minute of description of the ten minuets. We are now currently discussing the ending, but will eventually be making some minor changes. We have both written the proposal and have nearly finished it.

The Script is currently being written by myself and Maddie, long way to go but were definitely on the verge of smashing the preproduction work as a team and have no worries about the script so far.

Today we have been introduced to Aftereffects manipulating images, I found quiet interesting but found it hard grasp the hang of it. However in our production we are not likely to use after effect, but on the other hand could be useful for police lights, blood props, background bluer or transitions.

Today we also may be making a production schedule and shot list decisions of time of location etc.

Diary Entry 3 : 08/05/14

Today I and Maddie will be finishing of the treatment, which is almost done. We have also made a character profile of each of the characters.

Today with the script will by our main priority, as we are filming on Tuesday 13th, At the moment everything is going really well, the work is on schedual. I have no worries with this production, we have our cameras ready to take out on a Friday.

1. Start -- The Mystery Entrance EST: 1 min 
Clock-- Door Handle(C/U), Bottom half of door(MS) Visual of legs, heels and Dress. Girls Enter, Protagonist falls on her knees with (blood) on her hands crawling to the drippy tap in the kitchen. Protagonist washes her hand (OHS) along side her, best friend is tearful and shocked. Best friend goes to lock the door but the protagonist is certain the door is already locked, so there is no need. 

2.First Appearance EST: 1 minuet 
Front door BANG, BANG(LS from the kitchen facing the door visual of the hall way). Girls do not wish to answer the door late at night so they walk to the living room window looking outside. Black figure acknowledges them but the girls pull the curtains across. They go up stairs closing the door behind them -- from door (20-30 seconds) Costume change in to pyjamas.

3. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID! EST:
A loud knock on the door begins shot to maddie looking worried then shot to dee feeling curious but not worried. (letter box Open and Closes)(CU)  A note falls through the letter box but the Protagonist is upstairs unaware. She looks out of the window, the figure starts to walk of in the other directions but protagonist mistakes in seeing something else(CAM) then looses sight of him. Protagonist tries to relax as she's confused and generally a bit scared and cautious about the stranger. 

4. Lock Down! EST: 1 min 
Protagonist goes down stairs to have a look around for a peace of mind, then comes across a note and from that moment she realises she is completely worried. Protagonist rushes to all the windows and doors, full necessary lock down. Only the door she is most certain was locked, wasn't. As she goes to switch the back garden light of from the living room. What she doesn't know she had alarmed the stranger who went to behind the house, and reassured him it was definitely that house. Protagonist then slowly sits down on the sofa. --LS (Out back)-- Sofa of protagonist wrapped up lying down.

5. You Missed a Door! EST: 1 Min
-- Back garden (Diagetic wind and build up of non-Diagetic music) Camera tracking In front of the stranger following up the decking to the back door (which leads into the kitchen) -- handle from the inside gradually gets pushed down and as it opens cuts to -- Sofa, not long after she hears a noise which alarms her, she gets up and exits the living room double doors (darkish) as she turns left facing the kitchen door (lights are off) her intensions were to look upstairs. Protagonist slowly walks down the hall way but as she turned a face/eyes appear in the one of the square door glass of the kitchen door. With out notice she goes upstairs. 

6. The tension!  EST: 1 Min

As she goes upstairs checking all the rooms, she opens the door of where her best friend (Maddie) is on the bed with her head low and wrapped around her legs. (CU) -- face as she lifts her head, They talk about not being able to be honest. 

7. The knowing  Est: 1 min

They have a minor argument, Tori walks of down stairs with the hump. Her best friend gets up and walks up to the banisters looking down the banisters but when she sees the kitchen door open, she lowers her self. The stranger walks down the hall way but turns in (Maddies) direction, She ducks in complete silence. She realises a stranger is in the house. 

8. Help?  Est: 1 min

 -- shot of sofa (tori) and in vision of the double doors, stranger walks past -- (C/U) phone (Maddies) ringing -- (M/S) -- (C/U) thumb rejecting the call and puts the phone out of sight-- Kiera with her back up against the wall by the banisters in tears she calls the police but is worried about the safety of her best friend. 

9. Big finale  Est: 1 Min

As she finishes the call looking away from the stair well (the back ground blurs out) the stranger stands there glaring at her. A second silence and Kiera whispers (asking for a pardon) Stranger steps closer and she screams.

Torie who is alarmed runs to the stair case, poking her head up at Kiera. (Dee) grabs a knife from the kitchen and switches the house lights of for a moment and shouts run(blacked out) Kiera barges the stranger and runs in one of the rooms, Tori at the bottom of the stairs trying to grab her phone*No Signal* Home phone no where to be found. Hoping for a sound or sign of her best friend or the where abouts of the stranger. (Dee) goes to turn the lights on at the other end of the hall and the stranger is stood there at the position she was in, with Kiera in front.

10. The end   Est: 1 Min

Tori tries talking to him, asking him what he wants. Police sirens suddenly appear. Kiera says it's her fault in tears and wants tori to run. Tori Denys, this moment is very time consuming and rushing full of stress and decisions. --

(After effects)

-- out side down the street. police lights are at the end of the street. Get to the car park, one police man walk in Kiera lye's there with blood on her head and bruise on her eye in the living room unconscious. looks like it's been tipped up side down and had a struggle. The Camera Pans from Maddie to the side cabinet to a picture of tore.

(Policeman/Undercover - who knows the girls) **To be developed**

fade in, fade out-- music and credits.

Rough script

Tori - Dark hair, Confident, drunk.

Kiera - Blonde hair, Scared,  drunk.

Ext: In House, almost decorated, spacious, well kept.

Characters enter with tears and sound of emotion.

 

Maddie(KIERA)

So this is what happens on a night out.

Both look at (Dee's) hands.

Dee(TORI)(emotional yet confident)

I need to clean my hands.

SILENCE, Deep breathing and build up music.

Kiera(shocked and confused)- 

Are we going to be okay?

Tori(eye contact)

course we are, you saw what was happening.

HUFF, Kiera walks over to the back door handle.

Tori(snaps)

No don't bother.

Pulls hand back and turns to look at dee to ask why.

Tori(calmer voice)

Sorry, the door is always locked.

Tori(understanding)

It's okay.

Tori heavily puts her hands down on the side in grief,

Knock, knock. Girls look at each other then the door.

Tori(confused)

Who knocks at 1o'clock in the morning?

Kiera 

I don't know, but I don't think we should answer it?

Tori(agreeing)

No, neither do I. 

Kiera slowly walks through the hall way followed by Tori into the living room. They look out the curtains. 

Tori

Who is that? I've never seen him before in my life.

Kiera(curious)

What do you think he wants?

Tori 

I don't know, but I'm sure he'll go away soon

Kiera (Quickly closing the curtains)

I think he just saw us.

Tori

Who cares, he'll soon be likely to leave

Kiera 

Yeah, i don't know what I'm worrying about, I'm just tired.

Tori

Yeah, today has been stressful. think maybe we should get some shut eye.

Kiera smiles at tori, She knows Tori will always be there for her in her time of need. They walk up stairs and close the door behind them. Chance costume in to PJS. 

Tori opens her eyes and looks out the window. Tori looks elsewhere then looses sight of him. Tori who's a little cautions about this stranger, she continuos down stairs to look around just for a peace of mind, she finds a note on the inside door step, changing her emotion, she is completely worried (heavy breathing) The lock down begins. 

--shot of hands on all window handle, she realises the light in the back garden is on, she turns it lights of. She lyes on the sofa. 

Few minuets as the stranger enters, Tori hears a noise, leaves the room and gradually walks towards the stairs up to maddie in her room.

Tori(tired voice)

Hey?

Kiera(mumbling)

Couldn't get too sleep.

Tori

Yeah same, I thought I heard something.

Kiera raises her head

 but its nothing.

Kiera lowers her head back down to her knees.

Tori



Tell me what's wrong... Kiera?

 Awkward silence

Kiera

Like you don't know?

Tori goes to walk out, a bit unsure what to say.

Kiera

You just going to walk out?

Tori(Softly)

I would love to help you kiera, you know I'm here. Don't you think I need break for tonight?

Full shot

Kiera 

You do deserve it, but you're not effected by the fact we can't be honest with any one.

Tori

I'd rather lie to save my life, then be honest because no one will believe our story. It wasn't our fault! but it was the choice between US... or him.

--Silence--

Tori(softly)

I choose us.

Kiera

I choose us too... and I am sorry... but I can't just forget about it and act like nothing has happened. If there was another way maybe, we could --

Tori

Well then you know what to do then don't you, phone the police, get a clear conscious and be thrown in the cells for life, just Leave me out of it.

Tori walks away down stairs with the slight hump, Kiera speaks but doesn't finish her sentence in time. 

Kiera

Tori I'm --

Kiera gets up and walks to the banisters, looking down she see's Tori walk towards the living room, however the kitchen door opens, Kiera lowers herself, stranger walks down the hall way, stops and looks at Kiera, she ducks in silence.

Kiera gets her phone and rings Tori (Heavy breathing and silent panicking) -- cut to Tori (disconnecting call) -- To Kiera, who then calls 999.

Kiera

Hello, Hello, I need help? somebody is in the house. I don't know who he is, he's wearing all black, I can't see his face. Can you track my location. Please please hurry, My friend is downstairs on her own, I don't know what to do!! 

Silence

Please, Please hurry!

*Back ground unblurs* Kiera looks at the stairs and the stranger just stands there.

Kiera(In distress)

Silence



 I don't know why your here, but please don't hurt us.

I beg you.

(stuttering with shock)

Please, I've phoned the police they'll be here any minuet now.

(Silence)

Stranger walks forward a little bit, while Kiera walks back.

Any closer, I'll scream.

Stranger takes one step closer and Kiera SCREAMS.

alarming Torie who looks up the stairs, grabs knife and turns lights of upstairs.

Tori(In Distress)

Run, Kiera. RUN

Kiera barges the stranger and manages to go some where else up stairs. Lights are off and Kiera is waiting by the little cabinet in her room.

Stranger walks around mysteriously, Squeaky floor. Visual of Feet. Lights are of. Kiera stands up thinking he'd gone else where, but she was wrong. Stranger put Kiera at gun point.

 

Stranger

Move, speak and ill kill you.





Tori who is at the end of the corridor who looks upon the stranger and Kiera who were standing there at the bottom of the stairs, Strangers arm wrapped round Kiera's throat. Kiera in tears.

*Music change non-diagetic*

Tori 

What do you want?

We don't deserve this?

Leave us a lone!!

Kiera

Its my fault I should of screamed sooner Tori.

Tori

No its not, you didn't invite him in.

Kiera

Tori, Run

Tori

I am not leaving! were in this together.

Kiera

I've called the police.

Stranger

Go in there.

Tori

Oh you have voice.

Stepping back together in the living room, Tori standing infront of the windows and Stranger with Kiera by the TV.

Tori

Take everything, why are you just standing there?

**Sound of police Siren**

Kiera

POLICE!!

Tori looks away at the curtains (Lights flashing) and turns her head round to the stranger sharply.

Police at the door wide open, a man normal cloths/suite.

Out Foxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism

 

In this essay I will be discussing the codes and conventions, Issues of representation and why multi-cam is best for a News Show. Material includes interviews with former FNC employees and the inter-office memos they provided. Inflammatory tactics of the Fox News Channel to demonstrate the conservative bias that's handed down by Fox's owner.  An a example of demonstration is that Fox presenters say ‘A black man’ was announced countless of times (Repetition) indicating that he was the criminal. This may of been because he were an easy target. Targeting the stereotype is a munipulating technique based on Bias opinions. This can relate to racist offences, as well as satisfying their met criteria purposes of a News show creating fear and urgency.

Fox News, Australian born media mogul Rupert Murdoch is the Chairman and CEO of 21st Century Fox, the owner of Fox News Channel, member of the big 6 conglomerate, vertically integrated in a Oligopoly.

The purpose of all News Shows is to inform the audience of a message. Focusing on how they will present it to those who have access watching it. News can easily be mistaken on some information, whether it will miss lead the audience in happiness, sad, fear and very angry for example when the 9/11 commission hearing occurred of Richard Clarke when he apologised for "failing the country", the massive amount of emotional enormity outlet broke out over the media suggesting that it may of been a stage performance.

The News is very specific in what story to present. Fox news received a memo every morning of how they want to present it. For example a Memo on the 4/28/2004 From Moody 'lets refer to the US marines we see in the foreground "sharpshooters" not snipers, which carries a negative connotation'. This means that the control of the story is to have a negative impact. They want a negative impact to raise awareness and suspicion levels.

Code and conventions are important when filming live, because giving news without the right camera techniques, lights, space etc wouldn't look as apealing to the audience. A professional reporter must care for the atmosphere in order to get the emotional outcome required. The setting, presentation, colours, cameras, quality, sound, visual mixing, time schedule, floor planning etc... matters.

The concept of the News is to be informative, reaching out to the audience, almost like indoctrination in a mild form. This means to instruct in a body of doctrine or principles, imbue with a partisan or ideological point of views. Indoctrinate is a history technique once used by Adolf Hitler who embraced the dictatorship of leadership and power aiming at the new generation for children, indoctrinated against the values of their own parents. However Fox News show clearly denies any allegations of being biased.

Attitude rivalries when a heavy discussion starts between presenters about facts and politics. Developing a very defensive tone, showing their weakness position. News Show interview questions may become hard to answer because reporters(Paparazzi) strive for the real gossip for example when out foxed bill O'reilly attacks 9/11 victims son. Striving for something harder to get will be the story which is most likely to sell, juicer the story the better, so they will in fact break piece by piece down of every word last said. The surrounds may become uncomfortable and even  unbearable in cases of a high allegation or a victim, even a celebrity secret.

Reactions of the presenters 'shut up' give us a clear idea about where they stand, the differences of belief weather it'll be about politics etc. The reactions of the presenter 'Bill' received a viewer mail "Bill, if you are so concerned about public figures being bad role models for children please stop rudely interrupting your guest and telling them to shut up!" However they are many, many clips of Bill telling different people to shut up, this shows how strong his opinions are.

The representation of Fox News has a lot of repetition 'A black man' or 'People say' determine the negative side of point of views replacing them as facts.
James Wolcott Former staff writer for the New Yorker/Cultural Critic for vanity fair suggest Fox News doesn't have to win every argument along as they can counter argue and draw the argument 'that to them is a victory' because it 'denies the other side of victory'.
'Some people say' is a Fox News biased technique referring to the sources, exploiting political news to suggest that is the truth. This referees to David brock president/CEO of Media Matters for America who states 'opinions can not be proven false'. The idea is inserting political opinion, even when it is not need but is provided to get the manipulative message across. 

What I explained above at the start of this essay about the effectiveness of a message. This is another example of A meeting which occurred questioning weather Richard Clark is just trying to sell his book and that he is contradicting him self. The outraged question was 'did he have a motive behind writing the book then going out on 60 minuets, Criticizing bush administration' twisting the knowledge, of when Clarke claims himself failed the country. Jeff Cohen Form MSNBC/For News Contributor comment 'Its attack politics, to a Political Campaign'.

Reported Conservative bias of the Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox News Channel (FNC), which promotes itself as "Fair and Balanced". However Statistics show a ratio of republican and democrats guest, Republican are shown on Fox news have five times more then democrats. If Fox was balanced as they claim, the number indicates Brit and special report choose the guest based on political considerations other then news judgment.

 

We never know what is true and what is biased, as the audience are so easily convinced they believe what they hear because it’s on a TV. TV  is a powerful type of propaganda, that the governments would always keep an eye on. However in my research I found this from Wikipedia and I quote ‘Critics of Fox News Channel have accused the network of having various biases in their coverage of certain events. Fox News has publicly denied such charges^, stating that the reporters in the newsroom provide separate, neutral reporting. ‘ Really anything is possible, my main point is that to think for yourself may be the best option, coming up with a conclusion of your own.
 

The emotional enormity of a News discussion can lead to over powering voices for example 'SHUT UP!' says political bill. Jeff Cohen Former MSNBC/Fox News Contributor comments on the discussion.

Multi-cam is best used because it captures all different angles of presenters, weather maps, close ups, pictures etc. The multi-cam technique requires set design, time and effort, but is the best way to form a sophisticated informative news show such as fox.

Tragic news hit seevic College last Thursday at 4.55pm when teachers of the college rushed to the car park after noticing a car on fire, fire services were called and were there within minutes, shortly after their arrival fire fighters discovered a body inside the car which was ablaze on the campus forecourt.

 Fire fighters contacted police shortly after 5pm and more than 10 police cars rushed to the scene. The body was so badly burnt that investigators were unable to provide an identification, but the body is believed to be a local man in his 40's. 



Chris :

Shocked students and residents in the area have been reacting to the news on twitter one of their tweets was 'RIP to whoever was in that car at Seevic, absolutely devastating'. Students and teachers at seevic paid their respects with a minute of silence the morning after.

Plain clothed officers break down the front door of a house in Pitsea after a tip off, officers found a back bed room which had been converted into a cannabis storage room with powerful lighting to help the plants grow, they discovered 32 plants which could have been worth up to £20,000.

 A search of the property uncovered a machete in one of the bedrooms and the bedside table, there were also chunks of cannabis being dried out in kitchen cupboards and in the same room as children's toys.

 A man and a woman were arrested at the house and while the police were collecting evidence a second man arrived in a rented van containing hydroponics equipment, which can be used for growing cannabis. The three people were all arrested but have now been released on bail until april 9th.



 A local taxi driver aged 77 was ruthlessly attacked on Saturday 8th February at 11.25pm outside Sainsbury's on London Road in Southend by two men in their early twenties, the two men refused to pay the £11 fare so Kenneth Wolfe demanded it and was then badly beaten, then shockingly a third man, who is believed to be homeless, aided the two men on their heartless attack, Kenneth was left with a broken jaw, broken eye socket and missing teeth after the attack.

The attackers were white and wearing dark clothing, anyone with information about the attack can call detectives at Southend police station on 101. Thank you.

 Two men were arrested after trying to allure two young teenage girls aged 15 and 16 while they were walking in Rectory Road in Pitsea on 18th February, the white van pulled up beside them and tried to persuade them to get in, the young girls contacted the police, who then searched the area and arrested two men for public order offences, they have been released on bail until march 13th.

 A man is wanted by police on suspicion of aggravated burglary, Alex Stephens, aged 31 has been linked to addresses in Finchley road and Palmerston road in west cliff, as well as Jones close and Chiltern Flats in southend on sea, he is suspected of aggravated burglary at Grampian Flats on Balmoral Road, southend, on december 5th. The picture on the screen shows Alex Stephens, Have you seen him? Do you know his whereabouts? If so please call Detective Layla Barker at Southend on 101.

 Police would like to speak to these two women in connection with a theft at a supermarket in Basildon, these women shown on the screen failed to put all of their items through the self service checkout, they left the store without paying for these items which valued up to £80. The incident happened at 4.30pm on Monday February 10 at Asda in Pipps Hill Retail Park in Miles Gray Road.

A college student has been left paralysed on one side of his body after being stabbed with a chisel in a carpentry class at Prospects College on Southchurch Boulevard in Southend.


Chris : ASHLEY - CLOSE UP OF TWO PRESENTERS SHOULDERS.

 He remains in hospital where doctors fear it will be at least a month before they will know if the paralysis is permanent.
