How to make my grade better- Chris Cunningham Essay

Darren Thomas

Purposes
  • Change how you see the world.

  • shock you and make you think...

  • How are we entertained?

A) Audience -
Entertainment
Gives us a chance
To get closer to the musical artist/band

B) Industry
Induce the music
videos to market the song to sell more records to make money
- music videos are advertisements

C) Band
Showcase the band
more well known
get closer to fans
to promote themselves

D)Film makers
Creative expression
a way of making money
promoting your work
portfolio
memorable
advertising their services
reputation - relying on other people

E) Video has a message
Change peoples views
moral of the story
political

The purpose of the Chris Cunningham music videos, gives an abnormal entertainment to the audience, for example come to daddy. It shows us how Chris Cunningham's strengths and lets the audience to get to know the director and what he could do.

In the industry music videos are used to market the song to sell records to make money. Like an advertisement for himself and his moral, which will and have other record companies being interested in you and they'll hire you.

However in a show band it'll promote themselves and the director will became better known to music industry. Along with getting closer to fans who'll admire you.

With film makers, it expresses a creative idea. you'll have to have rely on other people to do their jobs. It'll be a way of making money doing something you are interested in, you'll have a portfolio which will allow you to show of your strengths. Chris Cunningham will be memorable only because he makes a creative expressing on something that's not been done before for example Window licker, there's not a music video like it. Expressing his perspective such as he don't agree men should have a sense of 'perverting' women, just because there females.

By making a video you might have a message to express which may impact on other peoples perspectives, expressing morals and political points such as Bjork all is full of love. In this his expressing that were all the same 'Robots' and sexuality is nothing.

Job roles for other news show groups.

Paul cousins

News show:SCN
Title; camera 3.

My job role had changed to a runner (wasn't too sure why) but this included wiping the windows because it was in the shot of the camera.

I also helped set up the studio, taping wires down for health and safety reasons being nobody would fall over. I also had to tidy up the studio room making it look clean so it was presentable on camera.
My most important role as a runner was consistently putting the cameras battery on charge and giving the ones with most charge in the camera as most of them was running out of battery.

News show: B.S
Title: Presenter

I played the job role of a presenter with partner Chris Martin. We had scripts to read from and practise countless of times.

They were many stage directions involved. This type of show is relevant to a Russell Howard's news show. Their attentions are attempting to make a humours show.

News show:
Jobe role: Sound

My responsibilities were sound control, I had too make sure when the V.Ts had started, I had to turn to the mics off/down set so it don't interrupt the V.T.

I also had to get the mics and ear mics to the presenters, and camera men so they can interact with the team in the studio.

FEEDBACK

Visual Story-telling

Pat Higgins

Visual Story-telling

Few lines - are a few seconds.

Direction on screen
The new characters such as a Hero enters from left to right. Reason being because we absorb information, and normally the Bad guy will enter for Right to left. We are not used to it, but somehow the audience will more likely take a dis-like them.

Leading the eye
Pin point of light, exposes a area for the audience to pay attention.

Balance and imbalance
Audience looks for symmetry, we could play with it.
a full shot such as a bed, with one person in it, is a imbalanced visual because something or someone is missing.

Size
The joys of film making, we are not limited with sizes. For example a nail which has fallen, could fill the whole screen.
They use this for important objects to emphasis a meaning.

Lines
Audiences looks for boundaries, colours are used for warnings.
Lines are used to separate two visuals for example:
Jaw, as the man who'm seems to be nervous and aware about danger runs down the beach quickly but is stopped by the water.

Scene to Scene
One scene to another you need to lead the audience when entering another scene. something similar or different.

Purposes of Research?
Mental health has increased for people who have C grades and under. Could be the cause of social problems ect.

Sources of Secondary research

- What information might a researcher need?
To use information as evidence to back up your facts, To talk to someone with a C grade student. Statistics of how many people who will have mental health issues by lack of education, social behaviour, over the years.
The reason of increase.

- Why might they conduct research?

We would do this because it would be more reliable to why the secondary report would suggest only C grade students will have mental health issues. If we had their opinion maybe that statement is more of a biased comment.

- What would a research need to consider?
To consider legal and ethical research, has to be balanced.

To be able to apply a range of research, methods and techniques.

  1. Primary research
V.t with AQA and Hospital nurses.

  1. Secondary research

Internet for statistics and quotes
  1. Audience research

America has got a mild capitalist belief by making money from fear, statistically Crime is going down and fear is rising up by almost 300%

- Crimes involving guns are normalised.

Leads to other questions to suggest weather guns are a positive or negative, such as...

  1. Why would they go bowling before killing fellow students and teachers?

Michael moore threads storys repeatedly using images voice over linking them together, investigation.
Bias or Propaganda > Persuasion, ideology?
