The big 6 conglomerate

Sam Summerson

Conglomerate = a combination of companies that fall under one corporate group.

Rubert Murdoch = Founder, chairman + CEO Global media.

Ownership means something belongs to you. Ownership matters because of various of reasons -
- profit/money
- reputation
- name
- status
- competition
- credits

Next years note = analysing where the money goes and what impact it has.

Ownership such as the BBC is ran by the government so it must include things such as educational content. Where as Netflix and love film are privately owned and can have a wider range of their own content.

My resource of the big 6 conglomerate corporations control.

The big 6 studios who own a staggering 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They are many possible outcomes which possibly could give of a mutual, positive or negative result. However in 1983 the percentage remained the same 90%  of ownership, but had 50 companies who were involved. In 2011 as you know the companies had decreased so rapidly its down to 6 companies. The negative for this could be that its restrictions within the 6 companies could be more restricted to what we see, read and listen to where as if it were 50 company's involved it may not be as restricted. However as an advantage restriction may not be such as bad thing mainly for children who watch, read and listen to the media on a daily basses. Although the media now in my opinion is neither an advantage or negative, but mutual. Only because media doesn't give an a advantage or a disadvantage for audience now-a-days. Generations are growing, Opinions are changing, Interests are different so media must change in order to remain a reliable entertainment source.

Big 6 ownership;

Ownership of individual companies;

What is subsidiary - Little companies owned by the bigger companies.

What is Monopoly - Where one company owns the majority of a specific market.

What is oligopoly - Is another form of market, when a few companies own a majority of a market. For example the Conglomerate.

Models Of Ownership

Vertical ownership and horizontal ownership is how they are they run.

Vertical ownership (vertically integrated) own Every aspect of a creative idea. Full control of post production etc. For example Disney and sony.

- Getting more idea's within the company may be more difficult.

Advantages
  • Full ownership
  • profit
  • Comunication

Horizontal Ownership means that the idea will move through out other companies for example someone else had wrote a script for that idea.

- could potentially get better idea's within other companies.

Documentary Essay **In progress**

Darren Thomas
 Documentary Essay
I will be talking about documentary case study containing primary and secondary research on the following subjects. Codes and conventions, Issues of representation, Why multi cam setup is used and why single camera set ups are used.

One of the Documentaries I will be discussing is Bowling for Columbine directed by Michael Moore. Although the main purpose of the documentary is to persuade American people to change their ideas about guns and gun laws it begins by focusing on investigating why the two students who murdered their classmates and teachers did what they did and went bowling just before going on a killing rampage, 'Why did Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold go bowling before they shot their classmates and students' and 'Why wasn't anyone blaming bowling for the cause of the massacre' Moore is successfully able to counter argue any reason given by pro gun supporters as to the reason why America has the highest gun related deaths and crimes.

As well as Bowling for columbine I will also be discussing Louis and the Nazis directed by Louis Theroux. Throughout this essay I will be comparing the codes and conventions, the issues of representation and the camera techniques that are used and the difference.  Louie and the Nazi's, main purposes is to persuade the Nazi’s to change their hatred into peace. The reaction of Louis gives the impression that the hatred is unnecessary. This is shown in a shot of just him outside the garage, of where there were many people present who takes part in the Nazi community.
Codes and conventions play a part in all documentaries, Such as graphics. For example, at the start of Bowling for columbine the image is of a main menu to play or select scenes. The images were of bowling pins which you could click on to choose what you decide to do. This is related to the title and later on relates to the biggest story of a shooting in Columbine school.
Theroux also has his own ideal graphics as the root menu. Louis uses bright colours which may connote an open minded individual with a sense of humour. This has a similar comparison to Moore’s root menu also, as he has bright simple colours maybe not as dramatic as Theroux but as soon as it starts the humour begins.
Codes and conventions of Louis and the Nazi's is that it’s all natural lighting and sound, This makes the documentary have a realistic effect. The views expressed in this documentary, they will sometimes disagree with the message of the documentary although the presenter will disapprove them in some way or another FOR EXAMPLE

In the Morning of the Bowling for Columbine documentary it starts up with the morning sky. This is to introduce the life of American society for example 'Two boys went bowling at 6am, yes it was a typical day'. The introduction of the documentary starts with him going into a bank and becoming a gun owner just by creating a bank account!

This shows the whole concept of the documentary (Guns), but what about guns? The 'Onion' unravels its self throughout the documentary and shows us the advantages and disadvantages of gun ownership. To introduce a serious comprehensive discussion, you must introduce the life style in order to make the audience understand the concept in so they can come to a conclusion for them self.

On the first day of Louis and the Nazi’s it start up with__________. This is too..

The concept of the Bowling for Columbine is mainly to have a better understanding of what makes having guns a better society. The images are used to show the audience how it is normal for Americans to own guns and for them to be part of their everyday lives. For example when Moore goes to the hairdressers we see him getting his hair done but also receiving a gun and loading it as if it were a normal part of his life!
The main concept of Louis and the Nazis is to understand why Nazis are so dependent on hatred against other cultures. The images used to show the audience makes it look threatening, For example when Louis went to the house of ___________. He used a wide Shot of the whole group showing the numbers of the individual Nazi's that are against Louis beliefs.
The attitudes of the Americans who form themselves into local militia groups and have their own training missions argue that it is their 'duty as Americans.' Above all they feel that as Americans they believe it is their constitutional right to have the right to protect themselves.

The Attitude of the Nazis are quiet protective over their beliefs, they suggest that if that you had for example part Jewish blood, or any other religions. They were labelled officially not white and that's what they are against. Nazi's who then starts to question Louis beliefs and his Ethnicity as they expect he is partly Jewish. When it starts to become quiet tense and then they ask for the camera to be turned for private reasons. Unreasured Louis denies his requests; promptly suggest he'd feel a lot safer if it was turned on. This presents the Nazi's as a threat to society.
Both documentaries have two very strong ideas about life style. Excluding the differences between guns and beliefs they are both life styles of which you are a part of and will affect you.
There was a V.T of Hunter women, who was a gun owner even at young age. Explained ‘As women, I want to protect myself' then suggested 'If you can't look after you're family, who is?' All the V.T inserts of Americans all have similar ideas of protection and fear.

ABOUT ONE INDIVIDUAL
The people are represented in American as genuine people, dressed genuine. One man with a snap back and normal cloths, this man is on a threat list because he had bomb maker manual. He doesn’t look the part at all to be able to make bombs etc. The Americans who are more than likely to own a gun are 'getting to a point' without even an explanation to why they need a gun. This just gives us evidence of the normality life style they live in comparison to the UK where people would go down the shop for a chocolate bar or packet a cigarettes but not a gun. Representation is also dealt with in terms of race.

The representation of Nazi’s is that they are shown to be different from us. As in England it is stated that we are all equal and that we all have a right of freedom and future. As for the Nazi’s beliefs and attitudes they are represented on exactly who they are and how they represent themselves is actually their doing. Nazis grandfather of the twins and the Ex K-K-K etc all Nazis are proud to speak racially abuse for example “Nigger”.

Michael Moore is really good at setting the scenes for people who are not familiar with seeing guns in familiar settings. For example, Kayla's teacher who made the 911 call would of been one of the most significant evidence used in the documentary, because it portrays to the viewers without visual clues, the emotional enormity of the tragic incident. Giving time allowing the audience to place themselves in the role of the teacher. This is shown through the great distress in her voice while the viewers watching are thinking about what they would do in that particular situation. The emotional response is conventional because it’s exactly what Moore wants them to, feeling shocked and scared for the teacher and the little girl.

Americans believe they have the right to own guns because it is related to their heritage and part of the American constitution - the second amendment: 'the right to bear arms'. This means gun ownership is legal so that the individual can protect for themselves and others as a community. The American races all follow the same code, of gun ownership. Which makes it hard to convince Americans when they all think; the way they live is the right way to live. Gun means power, Power means control and Control means of a possible out of control I.E Killings spree in at columbine high school in Littleton.
Louis has a slightly different way to set the scene when having discussions with the Nazi’s. Louis focuses on what they dictate themselves to the public. The Nazi’s put on a show of emotional enormity about of what they believe their binary opposites for example “QUOTE“. The portray black people by classing them as one “A BLACK MALE” with use of countless repetitions from different presenters gaining media power and support. Beliefs are easily spread in a manipulative way which brings us back in the past period of when Hitler was in power. I mean this by manipulative indoctrination, a technique used by a specialised propaganda artist Adolf Hitler. By educating the young to believe their ideas, ideas were easily mistaken as facts at these dark times. However this relates to a follower in today’s century two twins, Ex band of Prussian blue manager by their white supremacy pressuring mother. Mother who chose for their child hoods to be “White Pride” their mother called it.
Atmosphere becomes socially awkward when the twins and family became known for. Louis who becomes dazzled of fear for the twins because of way the mother has had her twins running round a Nazi sign. The camera catches his puzzled reactions which makes it even more unbelievable of the mother to be proud.
Camera work is used in a manipulative way in this scene. There is a purpose for every camera angle used in each part of the documentary. For example, a close up shot is taken in an emotional scene, as it would enlarge characters facial expressions. Which then would stir stronger feelings intended for the audience. This can be seen in the scene where Michael Moore comforts the sobbing headmistress of a school in Flint. Michigan where the young student Kayla Rolland was shot dead by a school mate. The camera zooms into the scene showing details of the sobbing headmistress, which evokes sympathy from the audience.
A Single camera use has a few more advantages then in multi cam. Single camera has more flexibility, creates realism, and Startles emotions, less cost and a whole lot easier to carry which also means no time wasting. However as for Multi-Camera as a disadvantage it will take a little more time, effort and money for the use of better angels but pointless for consistent movements when locations can easily be changed. This is shown when Moore wants to see the gun hidden under the pillow upstairs, followed by the single camera man.
The problem with representation of gun law, is that Americans for example tragically two teens murdered a total of 12 students and one teacher. They injured 24 additional students, with three other people being injured while attempting to escape the school at Columbine. Then the mass murderous eventually turned the gun on them. The guns that were used were all legalised by shops, awards etc. The main issue is it doesn't take a lot to get hold of a gun and kill innocents without cause. Age doesn't really take a toll on American's for gun ownership. V.T's for example of the women, said that she had a gun at a young age.
The representation of gun law was the fault of Kmart of which the two teenage murderous, purchased their ammunition glory. Shop devastatingly guilty after a number of attempts to evade the issue Kmart spokesperson quotes ‘the firm will change its policy and phase out the sale of handgun ammunition’.

Problem of representation? + Faults they had
With this documentary 'Bowling for columbine' we are presented with different perspectives on guns. We are shown those who believe it is their right to own guns. I have already mentioned some of these above as well as many others, such as the cop who dresses up his dog as a hunter and even gives it a gun, which ironically goes off and injures its owner as well as Charlton Heston, the head of the National Rifle Association. Clearly many Americans think it is normal to own guns. I know this because each individual had similar perspectives. So I believe it would be hard to persuade Americans where they all are so dependent on guns. Guns just have a act for falling in to the wrong hands, For example the social awkward teenagers who went on a killing spree in at Columbine High School in Littleton.

Its really hard to figure out if the Nazis understand Louis some Nazi's are completely oblivious of the points Louis is trying to make. such as
Louis says "Do you really not see what I'm trying to say?"
Tom Metzger replies  "I see what you're trying to say but your brain is twisted". They are so convinced their opinions are facts. Blinded by the world of being treated fairly then living back in the 1930 of when the Nazis were titled 'Aryans' meaning there are superior then normal people. This is an example of when
Louis meets the notorious Tom Metzger at his house Louis: [looking at a racist cartoon] What have we got there?
Tom Metzger: Well, this is a typical white whore and a black guy.
Louis Theroux: What is the problem with a white woman going out with a black man?
Tom Metzger: Most black men are ugly, number one.

Bowling for columbine is shot with single camera in the majority of the documentary. Using single camera makes it more flexible and easier to use whilst shooting a conversation/interview. Although multi-cam set up could possibly get better shots, it won’t make any topics intimate. As well as making the interview intimate it will make it more realistic. For an a example of a intimate shot was when Moore places a picture at Charlton Heston house hold, who was the head of national rifle association. Full supporter of guns and gun laws, the picture was of Kayla who was tragically killed by a shot gun by a little boy at school.

There is no doubt Michael Moore, Bowling for columbine had made a effect. In my primary research, I searched the result after the bowling columbine feature film had been made. On the film review website Rottentomatoes.com, I had read the views of average audience's for example I found 'Even if his information is, oh, even 40% false... the ideas he is presenting need to be heard, examined, and reckoned with.' I have a great understanding about this comment, because Michael Moore holds great ideas and arguments about the issues in America that have just been oblivious to the world. The result of this has raised more questions being asked, the effect it causes to civilians and the deaths that have been evidentially related by owning a legit gun by a shop down the road.

The spirt that walks the halls - Main character profile

Emma Watson - Nicey Raymond

1. Who is your main character and what do they want?

The main character is Nicey Raymond who wants nothing more then to be happy.

2. What are the obstacles they must overcome to get what they want?

The obstacles Nicey must overcome is believing in what she see's and interpret the concept of the road that she had been led to. That the reason being is that its her destiny.

3. In the end do they get it? was getting (or not getting it) Good or bad for them?

In the end Nicey understands why she has been led to her route. It's most definitely a good thing, the goal as a character was to keep the society in order. Something her dad never had finished.

4. Why do we care? Whats so damn compelling about this story that i should spend 110 minuets of my life watching it?

We care because the narrative is emotional based. On how you control the emotions building up side of you. 'Letting the monster out the basement' Audience may recognise the trauma nicey has been through watching her life just blow over like its meaningless.

5. What does my main character NEED? how is it different from what they want?
WANT = Material things.
NEED = Inner desires, spiritual growth.

Nicey needs somebody like her dad, to direct her path. What she doesn't realise she needs to let go.

Its different because nobody would want to let go of a love one, but its for the best for someone who needs to move on and live their life.

6.  Why now? Why is this story happening to my character NOW?

Her dad dies, leaving unfinished business behind.

Essex Online photo rehearsals.

Essex Online

Photos by myself -

As a co director i asked them to sit there so we could use the blue back ground as a green screen, to see the estimate space we had for a green screen.

We were testing out sound and the set design.

These are cameras operating in a certain position, purposely to focus on the important elements (the presenters)

The room aside the set design is a gallery where the sound/ lighting and vision mixer is operated.

We chose these lights to be in that position to light up the presenters and the room, this is to make it official with the correct lighting gives the correct attention.

Chris Martin - As a director i thought as we haven't used a green screen just yet the blue back ground and the blue shirt he is wearing colour clashed therefore does make him stand out as much as we would like. The colour clash mostly effected on screen.

As a presenter, he followed my directions really well.

Dear sir / madame.

I am writing to propose a short V.T (interview) which will be raising awareness for pupils, who are unable to achieve the exam results they are capable of.

This will include our quantitive research of statistics, giving percentages of the average effect on pupils. Our aim is to discuss what we could do to prevent a dramatic turn in pupils lives for example leading to distress.

We will be speaking to Dr. Asong the head mistress of gable hall, one of the best schools in essex. Myself and group partner Joe will be asking for her perspective about exam pressure, general school information and how they contribute to the community by educating the new generation over years.

This will be for a News show in progress called Essex Online and one of our key aims is to raise awareness for pupils. The target audience for this subject would be for teens to parents, this will cover a wide variety of audience.

The cost for this V.T will cost £0.00 as we have a Cannon to use from Joe and as an advantage it's local so it would be only be a few minutes to walk.

Thank you for considering my proposal
Yours sincerely
