Best Practice for recording sound 4 *Video to be uploaded*
Video is done - Just need to be uploaded on Wednesday the 18/06/14
1.
Assess the
location
2.
Choose the
right microphone
3.
Position
the microphone
4.
Connect
and check (using headphones AND levels)
5.
If
recording separately, use a clapperboard.
6.
Do you
need a second sound source?
Make sure you evidence yourself doing the above
things and explain why you are doing them and what would happen if you didn’t
do them.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Write a summary of other sound you have
worked with on the course (live studio for example):
The other sound sources I have working on during this course is when we were doing the News Show I were picked to do sounds on somebody else's News show.
My role as head of sound were to connect up the wires so they were plugged in, I had to do a sound check to make sure there was no fuzziness. I also had to give the presenters their clip mic and made sure they were in good distance of their mouth so sound will pick it up. I also gave the camera operators their sound source, connecting them so they can receive instructions from the other room where the vision mixer, light operator and myself sound were.
While I was in the room I had to pay full attention to sound buttons. So when a V.T comes on, the live sound being recorded had to be turned of or at least down. I done this because on set people were going to be talking, weather it'll be instructing the presenters to move forward, back, right, left etc. Or if the scrolling text board were moving to fast to read presenters might ask for them to go slower. This is because the live sound might over power the V.T that's on, picking up from on set.
The on set sound was Live studio, which means that while they were talking it was live (So no going back if it messes up) The V.Ts were already pre-recorded by themselves for example ours were just a boom mic facing forward to the kind people who were answering our questions.

Devising and Planning a Sound track 3
1. The ways you might be asked to devise a soundtrack?
People who would work it out with -
Sound Mixer
Head of sound
Who else would be involved would be the director.
Spotting is where you would re-watch the production and spot the errors or decided whether to input sound elements.
Picture Lock is where you have finished the editing then you would then add sound after.
Best practice in recording sound securely is to test sound and play it back however plan B would be adding dialogue into the production by syncing it.
2. Sounds i want, Where and how they will be sourced or recorded and purposes.
- Door closing, Ambient sound (Live sound recording using a shot gun) This will be Diegetic.
- Squeaky Steps, Ambient sound (Live sound recording using a shot gun)
3. Pre-production material
- Location Report - To Be Done
(external sound threats, problem with location, strategies we have to work around problems)
- Potential equipment, what is it for?
Boom Mic - Is sound equipment tool type best used for natural hearing, best use of a boom mike point is point it the direction of where you want the sound recoreded.
Clip Mic - record sound usually for live shows.
Cannon - Camera equipment may be used of hand held
Zony Z5 - More advanced then the others, better quality.
Zony Z1 - Let advanced then Z5, Good quality.
Tri Pod - Avoids shaky shots
Dolly - To track or pan.
The software i intend to use for sound is freesound.org my production does not require a sound track of my own.
The Benefits and Drawbacks?
MP3 - It is a common audio format for consumer audio streaming or storage, digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on most digital audio players. Mp3 Files are not large enough to edit with.
AIFF - It can store monaural, stereo, or multi-channel sound as used for, high quality. Comparable with Wave. commonly used in professional recording industries for many years.
Wave - It is the main format used on window systems for raw and typically uncompressed audio, this stores the data in a chunk.
4. Explanations of the following and relevant issues connected with them.
- Public Domain Materials - This will allow you to use these materials as the public who are the ones who own it.
- Downloading from the internet ( share sites, ripping from youtube ) Downloading may be good for general public, but it is indeed stealing, finding that its a criminal offence can place yourself in court if you download then edit afterwards would not be a good idea.
- Licensed Music - music that already exists but you unable to use to as its licensed to protect their copy write.
- MCPS-PRS
This websites provides a way to perform or play copy write music, however the draw back is that it wont be yours. This will allow you to edit with songs/tunes that are illegal to use under their terms.

The Commissioning process!
Getting it Made!
Agent is some one who acts on behalf of another, given an active role or produces a specified effect in favour of their client.
Reasons being you may need an agent to help you further your career and choose the best options for you to profit. I would consider one if a deal was offered and I needed professional advice.
Name of a BBC commissioning editor Lindsay Bradbury, What they do is have involvement at every stage of a project. Commission editors are the key link between the initial proposal for a product, magazines or published work. They ensure the production level to a specification or time. They acknowledge the marketing process for future potential. They are the support for future clients who negotiating contract terms with authors and agents in their clients favour.
E-commission is a process of sending your proposal and treatment for example to the BBC, Members of the public or individuals without broadcast production or online experience as a Director, Writer or Producer for a broadcaster cannot register for e-Commissioning.
If I were to get my single camera drama adapted into a movie at Warner Brothers, The producer would decide whether it happened. If they are interested in funding the production they will of a contract which cover finances.
Stuff a Warner Brothers get green lit by producers into funding the production, working with agents usually finding a script to produce it.
However Warners don't buy it, but an independent film company do, the involvement a script writer would be depending on the terms of the contracts protected my omission insurance, you could have none involvement at all if they bought it our right, However other terms can include a fixed price every showing time.
Story of what happens to a writer during a development and production: Pat Higgins who wrote strippers vs wear wolfs who had been given a one off payment to take the story off of his hands, this means that he had no right in anything to do with the story anymore, it also means that he did not own this story once they had paid him.
Independent company are worried about errors and Omissions insurance on your script so after purchasing your script they may higher a script doctor. Which they will examine all errors to prevent law suits. In this case it could result because of a copy write issue or characterising people etc.
Omission insurance are protectors of business and individuals from claims and lawsuits due to failure of performance of contract work. This covers lawyers of a company and self employed professionals. They might need to consider Omission insurance to ensure themselves of payment.

Soundtrack Week 2
Developing my own soundtracks
1. Four Descriptive works.
1. Four Descriptive works.
- Intense
- Erie
- Calm
- Mysterious
2. The Sound track will help tell my story by introducing the audience of the emotional impact of whats happening in the visuals.
3. Consider the following sound elements and how:
- live sound I can most definitely consider, for example the wind of when the stranger is out side creates realism as their is no dialogue.
- ADR/Foley/SFX - Everyday sounds is important, we don't want our film to look unrealistic, so for an a example the letter box sound will be used to wake the protagonist.
- Music - I can consider music however it wont be my important thing I will consider because I'm more likely to use ambience, but on the other hand I could use it for the credit, maybe a sad track to end of as one of the girls is missing.
- Ambience and Soundscapes - Definitely will consider ambience and soundscapes to tone out production, make the viewers feel for the girls in trouble.
Soundtrack 1: Ambience
I will use a soundtrack on free sounds.org of music building up to create an intense emotion throughout the 10 minuet film. This sound track with be diagetic sound so that the actors will not hear the music and will be played through out the film, this will show how much impact this stranger has on the girls when entering.
Live Sound will be recorded on the location for example heavy breathing, foot steps and door slamming. We chose to do live sound to create a realism effect, however if the sound doesn't work and picks up the sound we didn't want then we will move to plan B.
Plan B - ADR may be necessary like i explained above if the sound does not go to plan. Mine and Maddes aim to create a naturalistic feel to the dialogue, however will have to do this because as we turned towards the window looking out at the stranger couldn't hear the dialogue as well as we liked to.
Music is a possibility to use at the end of the production to single out the emotion left.
Sound scapes/ ambient mood will probably most definitely use to tone our production.

Sound Track 1
Deanna Ricketts
Paul Cousins
1. The AudienceYou have a character that is feeling stressed, think of as many ways you can tell the audience this through sound alone:
Stressed Character:
Irritating background diegetic sounds
Repetitive Noises
Shouting
Tears
Rustling
Inner Thoughts
Clock Ticking
High Pitched
Classical Music
Voices
Sirens
Banging
Eerie
Tapping Fingers
Deep Breathing
Increasing Volume
Echo
Heartbeat
Footsteps
Running water
Screams
Music
Exaggerated Sounds
Strong wind
How do audiences listen to soundtracks? Think about the space, the environment and the speakers?
The audience's view point of sound can change based on their surroundings when watching a film, this could be due to the different speakers or different tones.
As an example if you were watching a film which is known to make you 'on the edge of your seat' In the cinema they use 5.1 speakers so you are more then likely to have more emotions of effect on you then if you were watching a Stero of a smaller home screen.
I know this because the audience are more focused on the sounds that in the directors opinion matter. They engage in the film more bringing the sound and images to life. 5.1 is a room area of 5 speakers placed around the room creating sound from all directions.

2. The Sounds
Sound Track
Name of Movie: Green Street
Independent drama, Football
hooligans in England, Directed by Lexi Alexander 2005 a 2.07 clip from Youtube.
The surroundings are specific;
every shot has a meaning including sound, which can be very important in film.
Sound enhances the actions from objects in a horror movie or in this clip,
physically by actors.
Sound can verify the space that the
protagonist has, for example in the clip Matt Buckner, who is the new arrival
the cam is in the view point of him as the protagonist. The character has not
got a lot of space, however if you wasn’t looking at the film you would know
because of the environment sound. I think that sound is done by Stereo because
I know audio speakers have natural hearing that come from different areas at
once.
I think that the sound of the men
singing the football song and the dialogue have been used by three different types of sound
methods. The song I think is recorded by Live sounds used by a boom mike on set, for example:
14 seconds into the clip Dialogue begins and I think this has been added in because as the guy who speaks first is actually louder than the men singing/shouting. This method is called ADR adding it in the post production from an audio studio. However I can definitely conclude that this specific scene uses Ambience sound throughout to enhance the purpose of this scene. West Ham United football club is every man’s common hobby in the pub, connecting as a unit of football fans/hooligans. Ambience also represents the character as a whole for example, as the others who surround him were more in their comfort zone than he was. I think this because the sound is not focused on him anymore, its focused on the fact he isn’t jumping about and he remains back with his new crowd. Creating a realisation of what the protagonist wants which brings us back and relates to the plot of which he may lose what he wants and gets what he needs.
